Sleeping Warm in Cool Weather
Here are a few things to do in order to spend a warm and comfortable night when camping in cool weather.
- Hot Rock
- Warm up a rock by the camp fire, wrap it in an old towel or part of a blanket, and put it in the bottom of your sleeping bag. Be sure not to get it so hot as to burn the wrapping.
- Foam Mattress
- Use a foam mattress rather than an inflatable one. Much better insulation.
- Extra Blanket
- If you use an extra blanket with an inflatable mattress, put it underneath you rather than on top. With your weight squashing the bottom side of the sleeping bag, it's insulating properties are greatly reduced. News paper under you is also good.
- Camp Clear of the Frost Zone
- If there's to be a frost, it's more likely, and will be more severe in the gully or beside the creek. Camp well up on the creek bank or up the hill a little.
- Keep Your Gear Dry
- Be sure your sleeping bag and the clothes you sleep in are dry. No sweaty socks.
- Warm Up by the Fire
- Last thing before you pop into bed, have a good warm up beside the camp fire.
- Use a Warm Coat
- Put your coat on the mattress, under your feet and something else on top. Nothing worse than waking in the night with cold feet.
